2025 ABWP Rebecca Lee Crumpler, MD Scholarship Application

The Association of Black Women Physicians (ABWP) provides Rebecca Lee Crumpler, MD Scholarships to African American female medical students who are permanent residents of  California or enrolled in California medical schools. The awards are based on financial need and academic merit. Young women who are excellent candidates for this scholarship embrace the organization’s ideals as represented in the following mission statement: 


“ABWP is an organized network of Black Women Physicians committed to the improvement of public health and welfare through the advancement of knowledge concerning women and community health. We serve as a philanthropic source of funds to projects related to the health concerns of underserved communities. We endeavor to enhance the personal and professional quality of life of present and future Black Women physicians.” 


Please review the following requirements: 


1.   Applicants must be in good academic standing at a California medical or osteopathic school and/or be a permanent resident of California in good academic standing at any accredited medical or osteopathic school. Proof of residency may be required.


2.   All applications must be complete and include the following: academic transcripts, financial aid award letter/verification, medical school acceptance letter or medical school dean’s letter of good standing, three (3) letters of recommendation, curriculum vitae, short bio (250 words or less), high quality photo (.jpeg preferred format) and a typed personal statement.


3.   Application deadline has been extended to Sunday, September 7, 2025 11:59 PM PST. 


4.   Incomplete or late applications will not be considered.

Submitting Your ABWP Scholarship Application

 

To ensure your ABWP scholarship application is complete and properly submitted, please gather all required documents and prepare them as outlined below. Once everything is ready, you'll compile these into a single file transfer link (e.g., Google Drive or Dropbox) and make it accessible to the scholarship committee.

 

Required Application Materials

 

Please include the following items in your application package:

  1. Academic Transcripts: Official transcripts from all academic institutions attended.

  2. Financial Aid Award Letter/Verification: Documentation of your current financial aid status.

  3. Medical School Acceptance Letter or Dean's Letter of Good Standing: Proof of your acceptance into medical school, or a letter from your medical school dean confirming your good academic standing.

  4. Letters of Recommendation: Three (3) letters of recommendation from individuals who can speak to your academic abilities, character, and potential in the medical field. Please have your recommenders send their letters directly to Chanel at hello@blackwomenphysicians.org.

  5. Curriculum Vitae (CV): A comprehensive summary of your academic background, research experience, work history, volunteer activities, and any relevant skills.

  6. Short Bio: A brief biographical sketch, 250 words or less, highlighting key aspects of your journey and aspirations.

  7. High-Quality Photo: A professional headshot in .jpeg format (preferred).

  8. Typed Personal Statement: A detailed personal statement addressing the points below.

 

Crafting Your Personal Statement

 

Your personal statement is a crucial part of your application. Please ensure it addresses the following points thoroughly:

  • Update on Your Journey: Detail your accomplishments, experiences, and growth since your first year of medical school.

  • Intended Use of Funds: Clearly explain how you intend to use the scholarship money if awarded.

  • Alignment with ABWP Mission: Describe how your mission as a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th-year medical student aligns with the mission and vision of the Association of Black Women Physicians (ABWP). Highlight shared values, goals, and how you embody the principles ABWP stands for.

 

Submitting Your Application Via File Transfer Link

 

To submit your complete application, please follow these steps:

  1. Gather All Documents: Collect all seven (7) required documents (excluding the letters of recommendation, which will be sent separately).

  2. Organize Files: It's highly recommended to name your files clearly (e.g., "JaneDoe_Transcript," "JaneDoe_PersonalStatement"). You may also wish to place all documents into a single folder.

  3. Create a File Transfer Link:

    • Google Drive: Upload all your documents to a Google Drive folder. Once uploaded, right-click on the folder (or individual files if preferred), select "Share," and then choose "Get link." Change the sharing setting to "Anyone with the link" or add hello@blackwomenphysicians.org directly as an editor/viewer. Copy this link.

    • Dropbox: Upload all your documents to a Dropbox folder. Once uploaded, click "Share" on the folder (or individual files), and then choose "Create a link" or "Link settings." Ensure the sharing setting is set to "Anyone with the link can view" or invite hello@blackwomenphysicians.org. Copy this link.

  4. Submit the Link: Once you have generated the shareable link, please include it in your scholarship application submission where prompted, or send it directly to hello@blackwomenphysicians.org.

Ensuring your link is correctly set to "Anyone with the link" or explicitly shared with hello@blackwomenphysicians.org is critical for the committee to access your application.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.

If selected, the recipient and/or a representative on her behalf must be present to receive the scholarship award during the 44th Annual Charity & Scholarship Benefit gala taking place, Sunday, October 26, 2025.
